Julia Child, née en 1912 à Pasadena, Californie, était une femme de grande taille qui cherchait sa voie dans la vie avant de rencontrer son futur mari, Paul Child, lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Après avoir déménagé à Paris en 1948, Julia fut frappée par l'importance de la nourriture dans la vie quotidienne française. Un déjeuner à Rouen, où elle goûta une sole meunière, la convainquit de vouloir apprendre la cuisine française. Elle s'inscrivit ensuite au prestigieux Cordon Bleu, où elle étudia assidument et apprit à préparer des plats traditionnels comme le coq au vin et le bœuf bourguignon.

En 1961, Julia coécrita avec deux autres femmes, Simone Beck et Louisette Berthold, le livre "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", qui devint un best-seller aux États-Unis et popularisa la cuisine française. Julia devint également une célébrité grâce à sa série télévisée "The French Chef", où elle partageait ses recettes et son amour de la cuisine française. Son héritage dépasse les recettes, car elle a montré que la cuisine peut être un art accessible à tous, et a inspiré des générations de cuisiniers.
