Le congrès de Hampton Court en janvier 1604, convoqué par le roi Jacques Ier, a marqué le début du projet de traduction de la Bible en anglais qui deviendrait le fameux "King James Version". Bien que les discussions initiales aient porté sur d'autres sujets, l'idée d'une nouvelle traduction de la Bible a finalement pris forme. Selon les sources, le roi a été particulièrement sévère avec les puritains lors des premiers jours, mais a fini par céder sur certains points, notamment la possibilité d'une nouvelle traduction. Les détails de ces discussions sont parfois contrastés entre les comptes rendus officiels et les sources moins formelles, qui suggèrent une tension sous-jacente. Le congrès a abouti à la création de six comités chargés de la traduction, dont trois pour l'Ancien Testament, deux pour le Nouveau Testament et un pour l'Apocryphe. La traduction finale, achevée sept ans plus tard, a été minutieusement révisée et a respecté des règles strictes visant à préserver la continuité et l'usage traditionnel de la langue anglaise. King James convened the Hampton Court Conference in 1604, where a new English version of the Bible was conceived in response to the problems of the earlier translations perceived by the Puritans, an orthodox faction of the Church of England.
One cannot underestimate the spiritual, cultural, political, and literary importance and influence of the Authorized Version's preeminence in the English-speaking world.
