World War One was a global conflict whose horrendous battlefields consumed a generation of young men on Europe’s Western Front.
One such man was Canadian medical doctor, poet, and soldier John McCrae.
His experiences on the battlefield moved him to compose “In Flanders Fields” which became the most famous poem of The Great War.
Moina Michael, an American woman moved by the poem, was inspired to adopt the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for those who died in the War to end all Wars, her life's work advocating for veterans' welfare as "The Poppy Lady," spread this remembrance movement throughout North America, parts of Europe, and beyond.
