Born in Maine, then part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Sir William Phips (1651-95) rapidly advanced from shepherd boy to shipwright, ship's captain, and treasure hunter.
Captain Phipps was famous in his lifetime for recovering a large treasure from a sunken Spanish galleon in 1686.
