Cateri, également connue sous le nom de "la lily des Mohawks", est devenue une figure importante dans la conversion des Mohawks au catholicisme. En 1675, lors d'une visite du père Jacques de Lambaville, elle exprime son désir de connaître la foi catholique. Le père Lambaville, sensible et respectueux, voit en elle un potentiel fort pour la diffusion de la foi. Après sa guérison, Cateri commence à fréquenter la chapelle et à recevoir des instructions religieuses. La venue d'une statue miraculeuse de la Vierge Marie en décembre 1675 stimule davantage la spiritualité de la communauté, conduisant à une augmentation des conversions. Le 5 avril 1676, Cateri est bénie par le père Lambaville lors d'une cérémonie solennelle, marquant sa pleine intégration dans la foi catholique. Cependant, sa conversion suscite la colère de son oncle, qui la persécute violemment. Pour sa protection, elle est finalement aidée à s'échapper vers la ville de Prairie à Montréal, où elle trouve refuge et poursuit sa vie spirituelle.

National Indigenous Peoples Month in Canada honours Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-80) was born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, in present-day New York State.
Influenced by French Jesuit missionaries and converted to Catholicism at age 19, and after taking a vow of perpetual virginity, she left her village, and moved to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, just south of Montreal, Canada.
There she died five years later, respected for her piety and good works.
She was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and canonized as a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI at St.
Peter's Basilica in 2012.
