At the time the saga of Don Quixote was written by Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), the city of Guanajuato in central Mexico was an important colonial town due to the area's large silver deposits.

Because it was an important Spanish site, the city today boasts of lavish colonial architecture and a historic town center that is recognized by UNESCO for its cultural heritage.

The city proudly holds an annual international festival in honor of Cervantes and his famous characters and story.
