On Jacques Cartier’s first exploration trip in the Gulf of St.

Lawrence, he planted a 30-foot wooden cross overlooking the bay of Gaspé (Quebec, Canada) symbolizing the ownership of the territory on behalf of the French King, Francis I, on July 24th, 1534.
